Description
I took this photo in 1987 from the Jokhang's rooftop in Lhasa, Tibet. The Jokhang is a Buddhist monastery run by the Gelug School, although it can be considered Pan-sectarian. The Jokhang is the most important pilgrimage site in Tibet, and prostration as well as circumnambulation are common sights in the surrounding plaza. The Jokhang's Barkhor Bazaar is a marketplace and center of Tibetan culture. Only a few weeks after I was there, a major Chinese crackdown took place. The pleasant flagstone has now been replaced with concrete.
