Description

This is a detail of the top portion of an original batik dyed fabric painting I created in 1994, called "Tulips and Pushkinia". The work is on a 6 by 8 foot piece of muslin fabric. The entire piece can be seen in my gallery, along with several other detailed views. In this particular batik (wax resist and dye) process, I waxed parts of the image with brushes and djantings, then dipped them into fiber-reactive dye. In some areas, I instead brushed dye onto the fabric. I had once seen the tiny striped squill (Pushkinia) blooming at the feet of tall brilliant tulips, and wanted to express their relative invisibility in the tulips' shadow.
