Description
Finding this amazing fig tree (Ficus macrophylla) in a Balboa Park ravine (San Diego) was a real thrill-- You can't tell by this photo, but the depth of these roots is perhaps 5 feet or so! The Moreton Bay Fig develops roots that resemble flying buttresses. In fact, the roots are called 'buttress roots". This tree only grows well in tropical climates; Moreton Bay is in a tropical area of Australia.
